A “Message” to Ustvolskaya and Shostakovich Worth Reading in the “News of the Paul Sacher Foundation”

Rachel Jeremiah-Foulds reports on an “extraordinary relationship“ and nonetheless “sharp rifts” in the relationship between the two Russian composers Galina Ustvolskaya and Dmitri Shostakovich in an article in English in the News of the Paul Sacher Foundation No. 23 April 2010. The mutual influence of the teacher Shostakovich and his pupil Ustvolskaya on each other is not so easy to prove but can nonetheless be keenly sensed. Jeremiah-Foulds has set out on the search, discovering direct “borrowings” in the work of Shostakovich and even comparing the Ustvolskaya Piano Concerto of 1946 with Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto, Op. 35.
