The Vienna Philharmonic to present the world premiere of Peter Ruzicka’s “…ZURÜCKNEHMEN…”

The Vienna Philharmonic under the direction of Christian Thielemann will perform the world premiere of the new orchestral work “…ZURÜCKNEHMEN…” by Peter Ruzicka in Vienna on 19 April 2010. The concert of the Philharmonic, who also commissioned the work, will take place in the Grosser Saal of the Musikverein. Further concerts will take place on 22, 24 and 25 April.

The composer Peter Ruzicka has supplied the following comments on his work:

“My orchestral work ‘…ZURÜCKNEHMEN…’ resembles a palimpsest. It is a passageway through various layers of my musical consciousness. The memory is orientated back towards things thought in earlier times, things rejected and also unconscious things – in search of ‘lost time.’ Events following in increasingly rapid succession appear like a film of life running in reverse. The memory is triggered by two ‘magical moments’ in the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven: the high-tension opening chord of the fourth movement and that sonically incomparable, modulating succession of chords in the slow movement. Both of these are memories which influenced my consciousness and have continued to affect my own musical thinking.”
