Many Happy Returns: “Happy Birthday Variations” by Peter Heidrich for Chamber Orchestra

Who doesn’t know the world’s most popular musical birthday greeting? This melody consisting of just a few bars is sung for friends and relatives in every key, tempo and vocal register. Peter Heidrich has succeeded in creating a truly witty jest with 14 variations for string quartet based on “Happy Birthday.” For example, Heidrich varied the melody in the style of Haydn’s String Quartet, Op. 76 No. 3 and Mozart’s “Dissonance” Quartet, K. 465. The Heidrich Variations in a version for string orchestra will receive their world premiere on 7 February 2010 at the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, performed by the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. Robert Stehli and his KlassikPhilharmonie will follow on 12 February 2010 with the world premiere of a chamber orchestral version.
