Six Grammy Nominations for Works by Sikorski Composers

News - Grammy 2010

Among the Grammy nominations for the year 2010 are six albums with works from the Sikorski catalogues. Both in the categories “Best Classical Album” and “Best Opera Recordings,” the complete recording of the early opera “The Nose” by Dmitri Shostakovich was nominated through the orchestra, choir and soloists of the Maryinski Theatre under the direction of Valery Gergiev (Label: Maryinsky). Gergiev also recorded the Symphonies Nos. 1 to 15 of Shostakovich with this orchestra. This recording was nominated in the category of “Best Orchestral Performance.”

The second album under the “Best Opera Recordings” is the opera “Marco Polo” by the Chinese-American composer Tan Dun, a work that bridges the music of the Far East and the West in exemplary fashion. Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Piano Concerto with soloist Yefim Bronfman and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Deutsche Gramophon) was nominated as “Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra.” Other nominations are David Lang’s “The Little Match Girl Passion” (Harmonia Mundi) as “Best Small Ensemble Performance” and Yehudi Wyner’s Piano Concerto “Chiavi in Mano” (Bridge Records) as “Best Classical Contemporary Composition.”
