World Premiere of Moritz Eggert’s ILLUMINATION in Berlin

The world premiere of Moritz Eggert’s ILLUMINATION for large orchestra and jazz big-band will take place on 23 August 2009 at the Konzerthaus in Berlin.

The concert will take place during the course of “Young Euro Classic.” The Federal German Youth Orchestra and the Federal German Jazz Orchestra will perform the work under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies. The new orchestral work was commissioned by the German Music Council.

The composer has supplied the following comments on his work:

“ILLUMINATION” belongs to my large work complex “Processional” (various pieces for various combinations bound together into an optional open-air concept, in progress since 2003) which has been the result of my intensive preoccupation with different idioms of march and military music, whereby I feel very close to the ironical-pacifist approach pursued by Mauricio Kagel in his “Marches in order to Miss the Victory.” Some of these orchestral marches have already been performed at “Young Euro Classic” during the course of the project “Europe – The Blue Star.”

“In ILLUMINATION this sound material is developed further in the form of a confrontation: the contrast of jazz big-band and classical orchestra is here a very stimulating one, reflecting their sound worlds of very different approached to music which, in the end, are based on the same harmonic system; they have more or less the same DNA. In my piece, these two worlds preserve their authenticity and still enter into communication with each other; not all the contrasts are resolved and an affirmative coming together only takes place after mutual processes of exchange which have thoroughly crass and rough characteristics. A parallel to the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall this year is not completely unintentional.

But a processional is more than that: it is a ceremonious parade, a parade of light into a never certain future. The extent to which art, or music, can brighten up such a future, the extent to which human patterns of behaviour always follow the same paths, the extent to which pathos resulting from the hymnal elevation still has its validity – these are the questions that this work wishes to pose.”
