Schneider, Stephan Marc

*17. Mai 1970

Following studies in theory and jazz improvisation as well as classical guitar (with Andreas Grün amongst others), Stephan Marc Schneider completed studies in composition at the Heidelberg-Mannheim Academy of Music with Ulrich Leyendecker. He already attracted attention with excerpts from his first opera, “Das Kalkwerk” (The Limestone Quarry) based on Thomas Bernhard at the Hamburg “opera stabile.” He wrote two ballets for the Theater Vorpommern. His works have been heard in various countries (including Australia, Israel, Lithuania and Italy), both in concerts and broadcasts.

Schneider has received stipends from the Wilhelm-Müller Foundation and the Province of Styria in Austria. Stephan Marc Schneider’s musical language moves between a moderate modernism in the sense of his teacher Ulrich Leyendecker and a will to experiment that repeatedly bursts forth. Similarly to Jan Müller-Wieland, the latent scenic element is an unmistakeable characteristic of his compositions.
