West Cork Chamber Music Festival with Lera Auerbach and Giya Kancheli

The West Cork Chamber Music Festival will take place in Bantry, Ireland from 27 June until 5 July 2009. Alongside music by Joseph Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, this year's Festival will place special emphasis upon the music of Eastern Europe. Lera Auerbach and Giya Kantscheli will be present at the Festival.

On 28 June 2009, Lera Auerbach will direct a composers' workshop and perform her 24 Piano Preludes at a piano recital on 3 July. Together with Marlene Hemmer (violin) and Brian O’Kane (violoncello), she will perform her Piano Trio and the Postsciptum for piano trio on 5 July. The Vanbrugh Quartet of the Irish Broadcasting Company will present the Irish premiere of Auerbach's 3rd String Quartet "Cetera desunt" on 1 July.

As for Giya Kantscheli, his quintet for flute and string quartet entitled "Ninna nanna" will receive its European premiere on 2 July, performed by Janne Thomsen (flute) and the Quatuor Danel. Finally, an ensemble made up of Festival interpreters under the direction of Keith Pascoe will perform the Irish premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina's ensemble work "On the Edge of the Abyss" on 4 July 2009. This title also stands as the motto of the Festival as a whole, with which the organiser wishes to refer to the present state of our world.
