Maro cannot share her girlfriend Nanos pleasurable anticipation of the parish fair because she has not heard anything from Malchas, her beloved, for a long time. Moreover, her parents have decided to marry her off to the military leader Kiaso against her will. Malchas unexpectedly returns home and, at a rendezvous of the lovers, Maro tells him about her betrothal to Kiaso. An old farmer, who has eavesdropped on the conversation, tells Kiaso about this. The military leader is enraged with jealousy and swears revenge. Before it comes to a duel, however, news reaches the village of the invasion of enemy troops. Kiaso leads his soldiers in an effort to drive away the invaders. But jealousy drives him to return to the village secretly. There is a duel with the rival at which Malchas is killed. Kiaso is despised and turned out by his soldiers because of his breach of duty. He wants to atone for his guilt through by committing suicide. Maro laments her lover while the soldiers return to battle.
