Grammies 2002 for Gidon Kremer

and the Exclusive Label ECM

Also amongst the Grammy-winning CDs is the release entitled "After Mozart" with Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica (Electra/Asylum 79633). This CD contains, amongst other items, "Moz-art la Haydn" for two violins, two small string orchestras and double bass by Alfred Schnittke. Andrew Farach-Colton commented as follows in a conversation (Barnes & Noble): "In Moz-art la Haydn, Alfred Schnittke uses the surviving violin part of an otherwise lost Mozart work as the basis for a thoroughly post-modern musical invention. Kremer and his orchestra play it with sharp-edged wit and considerable warmth."

The Munich label ECM, also awarded a Grammy, has come out with a variety of first-class productions of both new and old music, including thoroughly successful recordings with the saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Since 1990 the works of the Georgian composer Giya Kancheli have also, with few exceptions, been issued exclusively by ECM.

The latest ECM releases are:

1. Sofia Gubaidulina: Seven Words, Ten Preludes, De Profundis / Elsbeth Moser, bayan; Boris Pergamenshikov, violoncello; Munich Chamber Orchestra, cond. Christoph Poppen (ECM New Series 1775)

2. Valentin Silvestrov: Postludes Nos. 1-3 / Maacha Deubner, soprano; Simon Fordham, violin; Anya Lechner, violoncello; Silke Avenhaus, piano (ECM New Series 1776)
