On Tuesday the young composer Jan Müller-Wieland was chosen for membership in the Free Academy of the Arts in Hamburg. The free-lance composer, born in Hamburg in 1966 and now living in Berlin, was a pupil of Hans Werner Henze and Friedhelm Döhl; he has already been awarded the Hindemith Prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the Bach Furtherance Prize of the City of Hamburg. His short opera "The Chinese Laundry" was just performed for the first time last Sunday in Cologne.
