Grigori Frid's "Letters of Van Gogh" to be premiered in Giessen

Grigori Frid's chamber opera "The Letters of Van Gogh" will receive its premiere on 25 June 2004 at the State Theatre in Giessen. Frid has become especially well known through his chamber opera "The Diary of Anne Frank," which has been frequently staged. This is sensitively made music for soprano and small orchestra which makes a commentary on the text. "The Letters of Van Gogh" are likewise set only for one solo baritone and resemble the well-known work in terms of dramatic design.

The opera was written in 1975, shortly before the composer's 60th birthday. At the work's centre stands the tragic figure of an artist who proudly stated at the end of his life, "I have paid for my work with my life." Frid explains: "I have tried to understand and fathom the power that helped this man to overcome his suffering, and to find what he was called to do in life."
