Kitayenko Plans Complete Recording of all the Shostakovich Symphonies by 2006

The live recording of the Symphony No. 8, Op. 65 by Dmitri Shostakovich with the Gzenich Orchestra Cologne under the direction of Dmitri Kitayenko has just been released by Capriccio. The production is to be a part of a complete recording of all the Shostakovich symphonies, which Kitayenko would like to finish by 2006, the hundredth birthday year of the composer.

Alfred Beaujean writes the following in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung about the newly issued Eighth:

"One may encounter the project with very high expectations - this recording leaves one in no doubt about that. Kitayenko, who left the Moscow Philharmonic in 1990 in order to take over the direction of the Radio Symphony Frankfurt until 1996, knows how to form the enormous arch of the almost half-hour long first movement without allowing the inner tension to break down. This is an impressive achievement, considering the epic quality of this music with its numerous soloistic parts."
