An Energetic Piece of Music, Intense in Its Sound: Xiaoyong Chen’s “Invisible Landscapes”

In his column “New Scores” in the Neue Musikzeitung (11/04, p. 43), the music journalist Reinhard Schulz discusses the newly issued score “Invisible Landscapes” for zheng, percussion, piano and ensemble by Xiaoyong Chen (Ed. 8512). He designates the work as a “concertante piece skilfully employing the Chinese zither (zheng),” in which the composer builds up a motorically gestural language with the help of a “dissonant way of writing with a great deal of semitone friction originating in the sound of the zheng.” He then evaluates “Invisible Landscapes” as a “demonstratively energetic concert piece, intense in its sound.”
