Five Minutes to Eternity: Peter Ruzicka’s “Memorial”

The following contribution appeared in the Berliner Morgenpost on the occasion of a performance of Peter Ruzicka’s orchestral work “Memorial” (18.10.2004):

“Five minutes to eternity. Peter Ruzicka does not need any more time than that for his musical memorial to his deceased friend, Giuseppe Sinopoli, which is a lamenting cry. Ruzicka conducted the gripping masterwork at a concert with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin at the Philharmonie. This is grief in its purest, original form. It is a farewell in profound, yet always agitated suffering. (…) the piece breathes blackness. It goes its bitter way, highly concentrated, then again hurried as if by the snare drum. (…) Ruzicka has succeeded, within the narrowest space, in composing a shattering piece, and also in carrying along the audience with him. New music can also be like this.” (Gtl.)
