European Culture Prize for Sofia Gubaidulina

Sofia Gubaidulina has received the European Culture Prize awarded by the European Cultural Foundation PRO EUROPA in the category of composition (endowed by the Bank Sarasin + Cie AG Basel). The awards ceremony will take place on 15 April 2005 in the Small Hall of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. The Dutch pianist and conductor Reinbert de Leeuw will hold the laudatio for Sofia Gubaidulina. Further prizes of the European Cultural Foundation will be awarded on this evening to Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica in the area of chamber music, the Basel Music Festival les musiques in the project category and to Peter Sadlo (percussion) and Michala Petri (recorder) in the soloists category.

The Culture Prizes of the European Cultural Foundation PRO EUROPA have been awarded since 1993 at irregular intervals. The Foundation is based in Basel. It is under the patronage of the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Council, the European Parliament and European Commission. The President of the Patronage Committee is the Danish Prince Henrik; members of the patronage committee include Pierre Boulez, Cristbal Halffter, Edward Heath, Lord Weidenfeld and the Prince of Frstenberg. The Foundation wishes to stimulate the lively dialogue between the European states and regions, thus contributing to a trust-forming cultural exchange in Europe. In this way, the significance of the cultural variety and the creative independence of the European states and regions are to be emphasised.
