Gubaidulina on the Island – Works of the Composer at the St. Magnus Festival

The St. Magnus Festival founded by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies in the Orkney Islands takes place this year from 17 until 22 June. It unites music, theatre, film and art exhibitions, also including the inhabitants of the Orkneys in choral and theatrical performances. The main themes of this year’s Festival are seafaring on the one hand, war and reconciliation on the other. Alongside works by Sally Beamish, Nigel Osborne and Maxwell Davies, the bayan compositions of Sofia Gubaidulina occupy a central position on the concert programmes. The Bosnian bayanist Merima Kljuco will present the works “In croce,” “Et expecto” and “Silenzio.” She will also be the soloist, together with Claudio Bohórquez (violoncello), in Gubaidulina’s “Seven Words” on 18 June, accompanied by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Garry Walker.
