For Gidon Kremer’s 60th Birthday: “The Lyre of Orpheus” in Hamburg

Gidon Kremer will be giving a celebratory concert at the Hamburg Musikhalle on 6 February 2007 just a few days before his 60th birthday. The world-famous violinist and founder of the chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica, now in its tenth year, is also a close friend of the composer Sofia Gubaidulina, whose violin concerto “Offertorium” he introduced in the West several decades ago and which he has since taken on tour all over the world. In honour of Gubaidulina, Kremer will be performing the German premiere of her new work “The Lyre of Orpheus.”

After the concert, the Tartar composer will receive the 2007 Hamburg Bach Prize. The prize, endowed with 10,000 Euros, is presented every five years and was founded in 1950 by the Senate and citizens. In their justification for bestowing the prize upon Gubaidulina, the jury emphasised that the composer had “built a bridge between eastern and western musical systems.”
