BBC Festival for Sofia Gubaidulina from 12-14 January 2007 in London

From 12 to 14 January 2007, London will be very strongly marked by the music of Sofia Gubaidulina. The BBC has dedicated this years Composers Weekend to her, during which, with Gidon Kremer as soloist, her work The Lyre of Orpheus for violin and orchestra will receive its British premiere. The following works will also be heard in England for the first time: The Deceitful Face of Hope and Despair for flute and orchestra with Sharon Bezaly as soloist and the orchestral work The Banquet during the Plague. These three works together form the Triptych which will be receiving its world premiere during the course of this festival on 12 January.

Nicolas Hodges will perform the piano concerto Introitus and the BBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev will be heard in The Light of the End and In the Sign of the Scorpion. Other important events in the largest Gubaidulina Festival so far mounted are, moreover, the performances of Hours of the Soul for large wind ensemble and mezzo soprano (12 January) and Alleluia for choir and orchestra (14 January).
