Second Recording of Giya Kancheli’s “Styx” on the Onyx Label

The British label ONYX, distributed in Germany by CODAEX, has just issued a recording of Giya Kancheli’s “Styx” for viola, choir and orchestra, which was made in April 2006 with the violist Maxim Rysanov, the Latvian State Choir and the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maris Sirmais in Riga (ONYX 4023). Alongside “Styx,” this CD, introduced by the renowned British CD journal GRAMMONPHONE as “editor’s choice” of the month of November 2007, also contains the work “The Myrrh-Bearer” by John Tavener. Thus Kancheli’s piece “Styx,” after Yuri Bashmet’s recording for Deutsche Grammophon, is now twice available on the CD market.
