Concerto for String Quartet: Lera Auerbach’s “Fragile Solitudes: Shadowbox” in Columbus

Lera Auerbach’s new work “Fragile Solitudes: Shadowbox” was commissioned by the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra Columbus for the Borromeo String Quartet, who will perform the world premiere on 5 April 2008 in Columbus (USA) together with the commissioning orchestra. Concertos for this unusual combination are a rare occurrence. When the German violinist and composer Louis Spohr published his Concerto in A minor for String Quartet and Orchestra in 1845, a few years before his death, this solo combination was revolutionary. It was, however, less of a surprise for those who were acquainted with the Kapellmeister Spohr and knew that he had adaptations of scores prepared for string quartet (a combination very familiar to him) for his rehearsal work instead of using piano reductions.

The choice of a string quartet for the solo part of an instrumental concerto is still unusual today. Nonetheless, Lera Auerbach has decided on this combination in her new Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra “Fragile Solitudes: Shadowbox” and found an unexpected solution.
