Four-part cycle “sound ecologies” by Daniel Smutny to be premiered in Cologne

The E-MEX Ensemble will premiere a four-part cycle entitled “sound ecologies” by the composer Daniel Smutny, born in 1976, on 13 November 2021 in Cologne. The cycle consists of the pieces “our lives” for percussion duo and nine other performers, “our house is on fire” for flute, oboe, clarinet, piano, violin, viola, violoncello and three performers, “wild edges” for flute, percussion, string trio and five participatory soloists, and “out of human control” for chamber ensemble and ten participatory performers.

The idea underlying this cycle, but also many other works by this composer, was summarised by Daniel Smutny in a philosophical-aesthetic essay, part of which we quote here:

“Music as ecological practice:

I consider and treat sounds metaphorically like living beings. They show a kind of characteristic behaviour, in life-cycle processes of transformation, growth and decline. They need a living environment - acoustically (as they are orchestrated), but also in the sense that they need to be constantly supplied with energy in the form of human labour. Without this, they cannot exist. In a sense, music becomes energetic labour. These sounding, living beings interact with each other in a kind of habitat, the piece of music. Some live in peaceful coexistence with each other, others in symbiosis, while yet others fight or even kill each other. As a composer, I can try to initiate this inner life and interaction and then learn observationally how the sounds relate to each other. I understand this biological image of the habitat of sounds as an alternative to the material and structural thinking of the past. It is not sounds that serve the structure, the clarification of an idea (however abstract), but their physical presence, their being-in-the-world, in the moment and in the temporal perspective of their growth is my proposal for a sensual perception. How does sound develop, how does it interact with others, what surrounding space is perceptible around it? The act of listening thus becomes a silent observation of the world, a contemplative perception of its atmosphere and its living presence. In this respect, it is a behaviour as it can serve the perception of our co-world - of all living things as a whole. I see my task as a composer in setting up viable environments for sounds and ‘acoustic habitats’. (…)”
