Dejan Lazićís Rondo concertante for piano and orchestra receives its German premiere in Munich

Dejan Lazić’s Rondo concertante for piano and orchestra based on the 3rd movement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Sonata in B flat major, K. 333, is also developing into a genuine repertoire classic both in its version for piano and orchestra and in the chamber music arrangement for piano and string quartet. On 20 October 2021, Lazić will give the German premiere of the Rondo concertante for piano and orchestra as part of his residency with the Munich Radio Orchestra.

“Isn’t a cadenza in a classical piano sonata something unusual?” asks the Croatian pianist and composer Dejan Lazić. “This consideration was the starting point - and delightful challenge at the same time - to transform the concluding rondo movement from the Piano Sonata in B flat major, K. 333, into a concertante version. The formal structure and the clearly separated piano and forte sections of the original, which can be presented as typical solo and tutti passages, supported the plan. Mozart’s own arrangements of the piano sonatas op. 5 by Johann Christian Bach also served as sources of inspiration. The piano part of my arrangement could be left in the original text, but in the orchestration, too, the primary concern was to remain faithful to the spirit of the original.”

In addition to this orchestral arrangement, Dejan Lazić has also arranged the same Mozart original for piano and string quartet and for its recording he received an OPUS KLASSIK this year.

The Rondo concertante for piano and orchestra has also just been published in a Sikorski print edition (SIK 1771).
