Peter Ruzicka’s KAMMERSYMPHONIE in Meiningen

On 29 September 2021, the Meininger Hofkapelle, under the baton of General Music Director Philippe Bach, will premiere Peter Ruzicka’s KAMMERSYMPHONIE. Three Pieces for Ensemble.

Peter Ruzicka has published an introductory text to the three movements of his Chamber Symphony:

Three Pieces for Ensemble

I
“THE FURTHER I GET, THE MORE I FIND MYSELF UNABLE TO REPRODUCE THE IDEA...”

A tribute to Wolfgang Rihm, who noted this quotation from a Gustav Flaubert letter in the margin of the score of his “Music for Three Strings”. It comments on a frenzied musical compression that seems to rise gradually - unfinished, open. My composition moves towards this passage, at first fragmentary, groping, only gradually finding language. Then more and more eruptive, ecstatic, circling. But it seems to miss the imaginary vanishing point...

II
HUNT

March-like impulses of a military drum open a frenzied course into the unknown, the indeterminate. The music seems to circle increasingly within itself, to cancel itself out. Then a distant oboe signal calls a halt...

III
STILL

A memorial. The wide canto of the solo trombone under quiet percussive impulses aims at gradual extinction. Almost nothing...
