The AUREUM Saxophone Quartet (Martina Stückler, Johannes Weichinger, Viola Jank and Lukas Seifried) will premiere Gerald Resch's saxophone quartet “Grid” at the Gmundner Festspiele on 5 August 2021.

Austrian composer Resch comments on its background: “The multifaceted work by Italian-Austrian artist Esther Stocker originates from grids.  Her way of working is close to mine because she - like me - seeks to break up strict orders in such a way that something free and spontaneous can emerge.  Regarding my saxophone quartet GRID, I have primed my musical canvases with different concepts of grids in order to work on them.  Superimpositions, shifts and leveraging of regularities play an important role here. The piece was written in the confused year of 2020, and I was at pains to find a ‘light’ tone, which on the one hand, arises from the jazz-like agility of a saxophone quartet, but on the other, is a conscious statement: a predominantly light music from a rather dull time.”

Resch’s new wind piece “Grid” for this popular new music genre features six movements Con allegria, Semplice con fantasia, Ciacona, Canone quasi Blues.  Omaggio à Conlon Nancarrow, Etereo and Con brio. The saxophone quartet AUREUM is a young Austrian ensemble founded spontaneously in 2015 with an extensive repertoire ranging from new music to crossover projects. The term “grid”, however, is not only used by Gerald Resch, but also by other contemporary composers in a wide variety of contexts.  A prominent colleague of Resch doing the same is Marko Nikodijevic. As part of a “composer slam”, the approx. 6-minute last movement of his work grid / index [II] for ensemble and electronica was premiered by the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie under the direction of Vimbayi Kaziboni back in August 2014 at Berlin’s Admiralspalast. The premiere of the complete version subsequently took place with the Ensemble Garage on 10 October 2015 in Karlsruhe.
