Giampaolo Nuti Records Alfred Schnittke’s Piano Works

The intention of the Italian pianist Giampaolo Nuti to record Alfred Schnittke’s entire oeuvre for piano on CD has begun with a brilliant first issue. Not only are selected early works brought together on the first Stradivarius CD of the series, but also the late “Five Aphorisms” of 1990 and the Sonatina for Piano Four-Hands of 1994.

The Five Aphorisms are dedicated to the poet and pianist Alexander Slobodyanik. Brief musical ideas are explored in the individual movements on a miniature scale. With meticulous instructions for articulation, dynamics, phrasing and pedalling, the composer aims for an almost detail-obsessed realisation of his sonic conceptions, which are primarily located in the piano to pianissimo region, alongside some forte and fortissimo episodes.
