Giya Kancheli’s piano trio “Middelheim” receives its world premiere in Tbilisi

Following several postponements of the premiere date for Giya Kancheli's piano trio "Middelheim", the premiere will now take place on 6 July 2021 in Kancheli's home country Georgia. The Small Hall of the famous Rustaveli Theatre in Tbilisi is to be the venue for the world premiere. The composer, who passed away in October 2019 in Tbilisi, had a close relationship with the theatre. The world premiere, is part of the Easter Festival and its performers of, are Temuraz Jaiani (violin), Alexander Tschidjavadze (cello) and Alexander Korsantia (piano).

From the piano trio “Middelheim”, Giya Kancheli also wrote an extension for string orchestra, premiered in Pietrasanta, Italy, back in 2018. The work was named after the Antwerp hospital where the Georgian composer had been treated on a number of occasions. Kancheli dedicated the composition to the hospital’s medical staff.
