Enchanting film score “The Silly Little Mouse” by Shostakovich in a new arrangement

Dmitri Shostakovich’s score for the 1939 animated film “The Silly Little Mouse” is lost. For this reason, conductor Boris Tiles reconstructed the score several years ago based on the piano score and the surviving orchestral parts.

Now, on 18 June 2021, a new arrangement of this highly exciting film score by Andrew Cornall is to receive its German premiere in Mainz with the Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Mainz conducted by Hermann Bäumer.

In his arrangement, Cornall eliminated the original spoken texts, moved the sound effects to the percussion and had the vocal parts played by orchestral instruments. Thus Mother Mouse is played by a flute, the pig a bassoon, the duck a trumpet, the horse a trombone, the toad a double bass, the cat a violin and the little mouse a high oboe. The result is enchanting music suitable for a wide variety of concert formats.

At the beginning of the Mainz Symphony Concert, which will be repeated on 19 June 2021, the Philharmonic State Orchestra under Hermann Bäumer is to present Alfred Schnittke’s popular and often arranged “Suite in the Old Style” in a chamber orchestra version by Vladimir Spivakov and Vladimir Milman. Here the composer plays an audibly pleasurable game with baroque quasi-quotations and stylised baroque dance forms: Schnittke’s reference to early music in a highly enjoyable ironized form.
