Opera Award 2021 for Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” in Birmingham

Graham Vick’s stirring production of Dmitri Shostakovich’s opera “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk”, presented by the Birmingham Opera Company, has been awarded the “Opera Award 2021”. The award ceremony took place at a virtual event on 10 May 2021. In this production, the dark story of the life-hungry and desperately murdering Katarina Ismailova takes place in an abandoned nightclub. Graham Vick spares no drastic images or borrowings from the genre of horror, particularly when he features a monstrous rat alongside blood-smeared brides. Chrystal E. Williams sings the title role in this production, with Alpesh Chauhan as musical director.

“The Observer” commented on the production: “Accompanied on stage by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and a band from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and with a radical set design by Banksy collaborators Block 9, the production is perhaps the most brilliant yet.” (The Observer).
