Deutschlandfunk broadcast featuring four works by Xiaoyong Chen

On Deutschlandfunk, Chen's ensemble works “Qian & Yan” for mixed ensemble, “Speechlessness, Clearness and Ease” for Chinese and European ensemble, “Watermark” for Sheng and ensemble and “Yang Shen” for ensemble are to be broadcast on 31 May 2021 for the programme Musik-Panorama at 21:05. They are recordings made by the E-MEX Ensemble under the baton of Christoph Maria Wagner. The programme’s presenter is Hanno Ehrler.

On this extraordinary programme Deutschlandfunk writes:

“The Chinese wind instrument, the sheng, blends quite naturally into the sound of the piano. The tapping sound of the Pipa lute mixes with the sounds of the flute. Xiaoyong Chen’s compositions are characterised by idiosyncratic sound combinations. He mixes European instruments with traditional Chinese ones in his compositions. He uses the latter as if they were made for today’s music. Such is the impression conveyed by the five works on the CD with the E-MEX-Ensemble produced in the Deutschlandfunk Chamber Music Hall and released by the Vienna label col legno. Chen was born in Beijing in 1955. He has lived and worked in Germany for 35 years where he has held a composition professorship at the Hamburg Musikhochschule since 2013. In his music two great cultures, the Chinese and the European, meet with equal weight. Reflecting the experiences of life in our globalised world.”
