100th birthday of Edvard Mirzoyan

Born in Gori on 12 May 1921, Edvard Mirzoyan was stylistically inspired by the great Russian composers Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich but combined this with the influences of his Armenian homeland. After his studies at the Yerevan Conservatory, he went to Moscow to the so-called Armenian House of Culture, where, among others he was taught by Nikolai Rakov and Nikolai Pejko. After returning to Armenia, he became head of the composition department at the Komitas Conservatory in Yerevan in 1972 and was a great influence on his students Avet Terterian and Dzhon Ter-Tatevosyan. From 1957 to 1991, Mirzoyan was president of the Armenian Composers' Union. Edvard Mirzoyan died in Yerevan on 5 October 2012.
