Hochgeladene Datei

On 25 March 2021 we are commemorating the 90th birthday of Vytautas Barkauskas. Barkauskas was born on 25 March 1931 in Kaunas, Lithuania, and studied composition at the Vilnius Conservatory with Antanas Račiunas, a student of Nadja Boulanger. In addition, he studied mathematics at the Pedagogical Institute.

From 1961 to 1974, Barkauskas himself taught at the Vilnius Conservatory. From 1989 onwards, he was a professor of composition at the institute. Among his more than 100 works are operas, symphonies, instrumental concertos and chamber music. His modernist compositional style, which never completely abandoned the closeness to tonality, is also influenced by Krzysztof Penderecki and Witold Lutosławski.

Barkauskas was awarded the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Art in 2003 and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of the Vytis Cross in 2004.

Barkauskas is a composer who has attained the highest level of mastery, says the Lithuanian Composers’ Union. Important Barkauskas works from our catalogues are: Symphonies No. 2, 4 and 5, concerto for viola and chamber orchestra, Pro Memoria for flute, clarinet, percussion and piano, and the Partita for solo violin.
