Cellist Christina Meißner with first recording of Gubaidulina’s “From the Visions of Hildegard of Bingen”

The cellist Christina Meißner has released a double album exclusively with first recordings on the label “Querstand”. She has arranged the ancient chants of Hildegard von Bingen and Sofia Gubaidulina for cello solo.

Among the works is an arrangement of Gubaidulina’s “From the Visions of Hildegard of Bingen” (1994/2019). The original version for alto solo was exceptionally well suited for cello arrangement.

In this work, Gubaidulina does not draw on the chants of the Benedictine nun, poet and composer herself, but transfers Hildegard’s visions into sounds. The Russian composer’s relationship with Hildegard von Bingen has been close for a long time, as both women are united by a deep faith. “Composing is a kind of worship for me,” Gubaidulina once said, “composing means praying.” Christina Meißner transfers this attitude to her new version of the famous Gubaidulina work from 1994.
