The Russian composer Alexander Tchaikovsky turns 75

Born on 19 February 1946, the Russian composer, pianist and university professor Alexander Tchaikovsky is the nephew of the composer Boris Tchaikovsky, for whom we have also published an article on this website to mark the 25th anniversary of his death on 7 February 2021. Alexander Tchaikovsky will celebrate his 75th birthday on 19 February.

He was educated at the Moscow Conservatory from 1966 to 1972, where he studied piano with Heinrich Neuhaus and Lev Naumov and composition with Tikhon Khrennikov. After becoming a member of the Union of Composers of the USSR, he began teaching at the Conservatory itself and was appointed professor in 1993.

From the early 1990s until the beginning of the new millennium, he also served as artistic advisor to Valery Gergiev at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and also taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Since 2003 he has also been artistic director of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. His ballet music "The Revisor" is based on a work by the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol.
