Unbridled energy and urgency in Marc Coppey’s recording of Shostakovich’s cello concertos

The Strasbourg-born cellist Marc Coppey was predicted a great career by Yehudi Menuhin even as a young musician.

Today he is a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and musical director of the Colmar chamber music festival “Les Musicales”, performs on international concert stages and has released CD recordings on a whole series of well-known labels. The soloist has been working with the Audite label, which is now releasing live recordings of Shostakovich's two cello concertos by Coppey and the National Symphony Orchestra of the Polish Radio under Lawrence Foster.

In keeping with Shostakovich’s spirit, he focuses particularly on the often irrepressible energy and urgency of these works, but also highlights their often oppressively resigned attitude.
