125th Anniversary of the birth of Operetta Composer Nico Dostal

Hochgeladene Datei

The Austrian operetta composer Nico Dostal was a nephew of composer Hermann Dostal. He was born 125 years ago on 27 November 1895 in Korneuburg and died on 21 October 1981 in Salzburg. After the First World War he worked as a theatre conductor in many Austrian cities (e.g. Innsbruck, Vienna and Salzburg) and went to Berlin in 1924. Here he gained a lot of experience in dealing with music by Oscar Straus, Franz Lehár, Walter Kollo, Paul Abraham and Robert Stolz, for whom he also arranged some pieces.

Siskorski has also published Nico Dostal’s operetta “Extrablätter” (Special Edition) based on a motif by Gustav Quedenfeldt.

On the content:

William Gibson, owner of an American newspaper group, is in dire straits because the “Amsterdamer Kurier” always delivers the sensational society news a day earlier than its own “Amsterdamer Abendblatt”. He is annoyed to discover that the famous singer Carla Gonda, a guest of the Vienna Ballet in Amsterdam, is secretly married to a well-known personality of Amsterdam society - a false report, as it later turns out - only by reading it for the first time in the rival paper. Eduard Bemmelmann is in love with Gibson's daughter Bessie, but Gibson does not approve of the match. However, on condition Eduard discovers to whom Carla Gonda is actually married, he promises to give his blessing to the engagement.

Eduard subsequently hires loquacious private detective Donderkiel for the job. At the ball held in colonial attaché Harry van Geldern’s house, Carla Gonda meets her host, one of Amsterdam’s most eligible bachelors. Carla is followed by the pushy Donderkiel, harassing her with rude questions. She asks Harry, to whom she has not yet become acquainted, for help. To get rid of Donderkiel, he spontaneously claims to be married to Carla. A little later the news - already printed in the special edition - bursts into the festive mood of the ball. The sensation is perfect, Gibson keeps his promise and agrees to the engagement of Bessie and Eduard. Meanwhile, Harry and Carla fall in love with each other and become secretly engaged.

But before the two can actually get together, they must negotiate a series of comic entanglements leading the couple to the South Sea island of Wauwau in the third act. Following a dramatic climax under swaying palm trees, there are no longer any obstacles to a happy end.
