Part 4 of the complete edition of all Weinberg string quartets released by Accord

The fourth part of the complete edition of Mieczyslaw Weinbergs string quartets featuring the Silesian Quartet has been released on CD by the ACCORD label. The two late string quartets No. 14 op. 122 and No. 15 op. 124 by the Polish-Russian composer date from 1978 and 1980. In 1977, Weinberg also recorded his vocally expanded work "Three Palms" for soprano and string quartet op. 120, a verse poem by Mikhail Lermontov, which, quite a time after its completion, was first performed by soprano Galina Pisarenko and the Borodin Quartet on 28 November 1984. On this recording the Polish soprano Joanna Freszel sings the solo with the Silesian Quartet. These poems by Lermontov were often set to music in Russia, once Sergei Taneyev had initiated the process.

The Silesian Quartet (Polish: Kwartet Śląski) has a special relationship to these Weinberg works, for its founding in 1978 coincides precisely with the period in which these Weinberg works were composed. The quartet was founded in that year by graduates of the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice. One of its main repertoire focuses on the work of Polish composers. In addition to the Weinberg string quartets, the Silesian Quartet has also released a complete recording of Grazyna Bacewicz's string quartets on the Chandos label.

It is quite surprising that the moving String Quartet No. 14 op. 122, with its second movement reminiscent of Shostakovich in many ways, was never performed during Mieczyslaw Weinberg's lifetime. The first performance was not given until 2007, eleven years after Weinberg's death, by the Quatuor Danel. However, Weinberg was not to be put off by this and immediately afterwards, in the late 1970s, wrote his last String Quartet No. 15 op. 124.
