Vyacheslav Artyomov becomes 80

The Russian composer Vyacheslav Artyomov is celebrating his 80th birthday on 29 June 2020.

He studied composition at the Moscow Conservatory with Sergei Balasanian and Nikolai Sidelnikov from 1962 to 1968. In 1975 he founded the famous Astraea Improvisation Ensemble with Sofia Gubaidulina and Viktor Suslin, where he experimented with a variety of unusual instruments from his homeland, but also from exotic countries. The ensemble was to exist until 1981.

Before that, the Russian composer had already attracted attention in Germany through a performance of the so-called Elegiensinfonie for two violins, percussion and strings by Artyomov at the Cologne festival "Encounter with the Soviet Union".

Above all Vyacheslav Artyomov has become internationally known for his colourful instrumental music.
