Carte-Blanche Festival for Sofia Gubaidulina in Madrid

The Spanish National Orchestra Madrid organises a composers festival each year at which the composers invited may to a large extent determine the programme themselves. This so-called Carte-Blanche Festival has been taking place since 2004 and has so far been dedicated to the composers Hans-Werner Henze, George Benjamin, Henri Dutilleux and Elliott Carter. The oeuvre of Sofia Gubaidulina will be at the focal point of the next Festival, scheduled to take place from 9 to 18 January 2009.

Alongside two orchestral programmes, one of which will be performed thrice, and two chamber concerts, there will be a podium discussion with the composer as well as an exhibition with Soviet conceptual art. An extensive festival booklet with contributions by Dorothea Redepenning, Laurel Fay and Valeria Zenova, among others, will honour the composer and her work in detail. As desired by the composer, Anne-Sophie Mutter will come to Madrid especially to present the Spanish premiere of Gubaidulinas violin concerto In tempus praesens. In addition, in accordance with Sofia Gubaidulinas wishes, the conductor Reinbert de Leeuw, the cellist Ivan Monighetti with his ensemble as well as the bayanist Elsbeth Moser will appear at the Carte-Blanche Festival.
