Piano Trio Nr 3 “TrioKonversation” by Johannes X. Schachtner: Engaging with Beethoven

In his new piano trio, composer Johannes X. Schachtner engages with the upcoming 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. His new work “TrioKonversation” draws on Beethoven’s “Triosatz” (Hess38, composed around 1784) and a “Trioskizze”, Unv9 (1790-1792). The new work will be premiered on 8 November 2019 in Bruchsal in a performance by the Phaeton Piano Trio. The work was commissioned by the ensemble.

The composer writes:

“My third piano trio was commissioned by the Phaeton Piano Trio for the Beethoven anniversary year 2020, and is based on a sketch of only a few bars as well as an early trio composition, both by Beethoven. The musicians wanted my composition to focus on this trio composition, which shows a developmental stage of the composer as a 13-year-old living in Bonn. Reminiscent of a minuet, Beethoven’s trio piece is played unchanged. It is followed by how I imagined the sketch continuing, as a trio. When the “minuet” is then heard da capo, the trio becomes a counterpoint that extends and alters the original piece and in so doing enters into a dialogue with Beethoven.”
