World Premiere in Barcelona: “Human brother” by Ferran Cruixent

The new work by Catalan composer Ferran Cruixent, “Human Brother”, was commissioned by the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya. Consisting of one movement, the work will performed for the first time on September 27, 2019 in Barcelona (conductor: Kazushi Ono). The solos will be sung by soprano Ilona Krzywicka. After “Human Brother”, the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona will perform “A German Requiem” by Johannes Brahms.

Ferran Cruixent comments on the work as follows:

“Human Brother” for soprano and orchestra is a one-movement work based on the text “Prayer for the Human Brother”. It grapples with the relationship between humans and artificial intelligence at the beginning of a new age.
The soprano soloist plays the role of a female super-intelligence that comes from the future to pray for humans and produces a manifesto about the humanism we’ve lost.
Some orchestral motifs, melodies and lyrics were created with the help of something I call “machine learning” and later added to the score. Excerpts of liturgies from Gregorian chants were also used after being processed by computer algorithms. This was made possible by a cooperation with the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Dr Artur García-Sáez, who works with the Marenostrum4 supercomputer in Barcelona.
The performers are required to use special techniques, such as cyber-singing, that I’d used before for my “Cyborg” symphony in 2010. Cyber-singing is a kind of digital voice produced by the musician that represents a new kind of interaction between the composer and the performer. An MP3 file is played by the musician’s mobile phone, a device normally used for other things.
The work’s epilogue references the Seiklos epitaph, regarded as the earliest surviving, complete music composition known that includes notation. It is dated to around 200 BC. The headstone of Seiklos bears the following inscription: “I am a headstone, an image. Seiklos placed me here as a permanent sign of remembrance beyond death.”
