Anna Gourari’s Elusive Affinity: Spellbinding New Recordings of Schnittke’s Five Aphorisms and Pärt’s Arinushka Variations

The Russian composer Alfred Schnittke was inspired several times to compose music by the idea of the aphorism. Schnittke, who died in 1998, composed “Four Aphorisms for Orchestra” in 1990, as well as “Five Aphorisms for Piano”. Both are featured on a new album by the fascinating pianist Anna Gourari, released through ECM. Schnittke’s pieces draw on poetry written by his friend, Joseph Brodsky. Another highlight on the album is Gourari’s outstanding interpretation of Pärt’s “Variations for the Healing of Arinushka”, written in 1977.
Aside from Gourari’s compelling renditions, this album shines due to the engrossing combination of works by Alfred Schnittke, GiyaKancheli, Rodion Shchedrin, ArvoPärt, Wolfgang Rihm with Bach transcriptions by Antonio Vivaldi and Alessandro Marcello.
