“The Little Mermaid” Lands on the Japanese Islands

The ballet “The Little Mermaid” by John Neumeier with music by Lera Auerbach is once again on the programme of the Hamburg State Opera on 10 and 11 June 2009 and on 3 July 2009. The John Neumeier Company is presently on tour in Japan with this work. The newspaper “Hamburger Abendblatt” commented in its issue of 9 February as follows:

“(…) Yesterday the Hamburg Ballet started its sixth tour of Japan since 1986. The programme will begin on 12 February with Neumeier’s choreography ‘The Little Mermaid’(…)

Japan has become a second home for the first soloist and her husband Alexandre Riabko. ‘We have been invited to ballet gala performances several times, love the country, its people and food.’ (…) Tour manager Katharina Benthaak organised and prepared the tour for 113 people over the past two years. `The decorations were shipped in containers in December,’ she reports. ‘The transport took one month, but everything is already there.’ The ensemble will then travel from Tokyo by Shinkansen, the Japanese high-speed train, to the further stations of Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka, where ‘Camille: The Lady of the Camellias’ will be shown in alternation with ‘The Little Mermaid.’

Silvia Azzoni and Carsten Jung will report on their travel impressions in the Hamburger Abendblatt.”
