Premiere of Johannes X. Schachtners “ConcettoZaide” with Matthias Höfs in Augsburg

The Bavarian composer Johannes X. Schachtner is keenly interested in the musical literature of past epochs, as evidenced by his popular pieces derived from the works of Mendelssohn Bartholdy. But we can now look forward to the premiere of a new work by Schachtner. It draws on Mozart as well as on a namesake of Schachtner’s, a certain Johann Andreas Schachtner, who was a trumpeter at the imperial court in Salzburg during Mozart’s lifetime.
Schachtner has provided additional information about the ConcettoZaide, of which we reproduce an excerpt below. The subtitle for the piece is Divertimento Nr. 3 for keyed trumpet in E or trumpet and chamber orchestra. The world premiere of the work is scheduled for 24 February 2019 in Augsburg, to be performed by trumpeter Matthias Höfs and the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by DomonkosHéja.

Johannes X. Schachtner wrote the following about his divertimento, “ConcettoZaide”:

“Johann Andreas Schachtner (1731-1795) was a trumpeter at the imperial court in Salzburg and the librettist of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Opera “Zaide”, widely regarded as prefiguring the later “Abduction from the Seraglio”. An unfinished singspiel work that includes dialogue and melodrama, “Zaide” is missing both its overture and final act, as well as several connecting narrative texts.
This is the starting point for the ConcettoZaide. The intrada is both a homage to the friend of Mozart’s father, the court trumpeter in Salzburg, as well as an attempt to write a “sinfonia” that could provide an opening for the original opera. The use of orchestral trumpets, which would have beennatural trumpets during Schachtner’s and Mozart’s time, references the Turkish musical style that was also a subject of the opera.The last, fourth movement entitled “Lieto fine” is a speculative composition in the style of a finale, written nearly 250 years after the original work.
The “Melodramma” section uses the music as composed by Mozart while the solo trumpet is deployed to produce a cadence for the spoken part that it declaims, recites and comments on.In the “Airaria”, the solo trumpet part is based on a vocal part from Mozart’s opera. During the piece, Mozart’s original material is continually being interrogated by the orchestra from multiple perspectives, alternating between two musical levels that often intersect despite being created 250 years apart.”
