Gubaidulina and Shostakovich are the main composers of the first Elbphilharmonie Organ CD with Iveta Apkalna

Of course, the first CD recording with solo works on the Klais organ of the Elbphilharmonie is by the titular organist of the new concert hall Iveta Apkalna. For a few nights, the native Latvian spent the winter producing this album in the Great Hall of the Elbphilharmonie and produced a truly exclusive album with works by Latvian composers. The album will be released on September 7, 2018 at Berlin classics.
The title of the album "Light & Dark" refers to the well-rehearsed work "Hell and Dark" for solo organ by Sofia Gubaidulina. Also included is the famous organ passacaglia from Dmitri Shostakovich's opera Lady Macbeth by Mtsensk.
Iveta Apkalna says to Gubaidulina's work:
"That which happens in 'Hell and Dark', these very fast jumps from darkness to light, also corresponds to the character of the Klais organ. The Klais organ has this great dynamic and emotional range. Since the Intrepret must only go along. This is often very fast. But especially in this Gubaidulina factory, we can really enjoy the very long exit. You can not be bored with this piece and think that the worst is just over and you could rest. Where there are more breaks and Fermaten and it sounds quieter, should immediately build tension again. "
