Eggert’s Linkerhand in Hoyerswerda

Moritz Eggert’s new opera “Linkerhand,” produced by Sebastian Ritschel, will receive its world premiere in Hoyerswerda on 10 May 2009.

The Görlitz Theatre will take on the production on 16 May 2009 in its own house. This title is nothing else but an abbreviation of the title of the novel “Franziska Linkerhand” by Brigitte Reimann, in which the author describes her period as an architect in “Neustadt” (an invented name for the actually extant Hoyerswerda, where Reimann spent a great deal of her life). In this novel she calls herself Franziska Linkerhand, Eggert explains, which, on the one hand, is a symbol of her being different and could be understood as the way she constantly gives offence to authorities, but of course also hints at the dream of a human communism which Brigitte Reimann was occupied with her whole life and in which the character in her novel fails.
