Delta Piano Trio with Recordings of Lera Auerbach and Dmitri Shostakovich

The Delta Piano Trio, founded in 2013 in Salzburg, has made a recording for the Odradek label including the Russian-American composer Lera Auerbach’s Piano Trios Nos. 1 and 2 “Triptych – The Mirror with Three Faces” together with the Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 of 1944 is one of the great Russian composer’s rather melancholy works, burdened by the devastating events of World War II.  In the Largo movement, the heavy piano chords of a Passacaglia determine the expression of this work.
The First Piano Trio of Lera Auerbach, which is very closely related to Shostakovich’s music, was written shortly after the composer’s decision in 1991 to leave the Soviet Union and find a new home in the USA.
Auerbach has stated: “Many of my works from this time – such as this Piano Trio – were only completed years later. Thus I wrote the final trio movement (Presto) only in 1996, four years after the first two.”
