Sofia Gubaidulina: Composer in Residence at the Festival “Klangspuren Schwaz”

The Austrian premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s concerto for percussion ensemble and orchestra entitled “Glorious Percussion” will be presented at the opening concert on 7 September 2017 of the 24th festival “Klangspuren Schwaz” (7-24 September 2017), this year under the motto “Any Questions?” and particularly dedicated to works of contemporary women composers. It will be performed in the Sillbersaal (Silver Hall) at the SZentrum in Schwaz by the “STUDIO PERCUSSION graz” and the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck (Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck) under the direction of Jonathan Stockhammer.

The festival announced the opening concert as follows:
Sofia Gubaidulina, composer in residence at the KLANGSPUREN 2017, may rightfully be designated as the most important living woman composer. The meanwhile 85-year-old artist expresses an impressive voice going beyond all conventions with a foundation in an existential spirituality. “Glorious Percussion” for percussion ensemble and orchestra shows her predilection for the rich fullness of percussive sounds. The five percussionists posted in different areas alternate between strict form and episodes of free improvisation.

Three days later, on 10 September 2017, the Klangspuren Academy Ensemble will perform the Austrian premiere of Gubaidulina’s “So Be It” for violin, double bass, piano and percussion in ‘Vier und Einzig’ in Innsbruck during the course of the festival.

Sofia Gubaidulina is not only composer in residence at the festival “Klangspuren Schwaz”, but also at the International Ensemble Modern Academy associated with the festival, beginning work there on 30 August 2017 and continuing beyond the beginning of the festival until 10 September 2017. Here, members of the renowned Ensemble Modern will supervise talented young musicians from around the world in the rehearsal of selected works of the 20th and 21st centuries. These prepared works will then be presented in various concert formats before and during the festival – as the ‘Klangspuren Academy Ensemble’. Sofia Gubaidulina will be represented during the course of the Ensemble Modern Academy with the following works:  Duo Sonata for two bassoons, String Trio, Five Etudes for harp, double bass and percussion, String Quartet No. 2, “So Be It” for violin, double bass, piano and percussion, and “Concordanza” for chamber ensemble.
