Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” Celebrates Premiere at the Salzburg Festival and the Theater Bremen

Dmitri Shostakovich’s four-act opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” will be given its premiere on 2 August 2017 at the Salzburg Festival (21 July-30 August 2017) at the Großes Festspielhaus. The libretto was written by Alexander Preis and Dmitri Shostakovich based on the novelette (1865) of the same title by Nikolai Leskov. This is a new production in the Russian language (with German and English subtitles) by the director Andreas Kriegenburg. The conductor will be Mariss Jansons.

A recording of this opera will be broadcast by ORF on 5 August (7:30 PM) on the station Ö1 and by BR on 8 August 2017 (8:03 PM).

Shostakovich’s operatic classic will also be seen very soon at the Theater Bremen. The Bremen premiere of “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” will take place on 10 September 2017 at the Theater am Goetheplatz in a production by Armin Petras, with musical direction by Yoel Gamzou.

This opera tells of the unhappily married businessman’s wife Katerina, who becomes, due to her suddenly inflamed passion for the workman Sergei, the murderess of her father-in-law and her husband. But Sergei turns away from Katerina after this act. Both are arrested, sentenced and banished for murder, and Katerina ultimately commits suicide.
