The Boston Symphony Orchestra has won a 2017 Grammy for a Shostakovich Album

The 59th Grammy Awards were presented in the night from 12 to 13 February 2017 at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Grammy Award is considered the world’s most important music prize.

As in 2016, the award in the category of “Best Orchestral Performance” went to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and its principal conductor Andris Nelsons for a Dmitri Shostakovich recording. The composer’s Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 and 9 can be heard on the latest recording in the CD series entitled “Shostakovich Under Stalin’s Shadow” (label: Deutsche Grammophon).

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 and the Passacaglia from the opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” on the Boston CD series “Shostakovich Under Stalin’s Shadow” was awarded the coveted Grammy last year.
