Mieczyslaw Weinberg’s “The Idiot” at the Bolshoi Theatre

The original version of the meanwhile frequently performed and newly produced opera “The Idiot” by Mieczysław Weinberg, based on a subject by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, will be given its premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow by the orchestra and choir of the Bolshoi Theatre on 12 February 2017. The conductor will be Michał Klauza, with the choir directed by Valery Borisov.

There will be four follow-up performances of “The Idiot” at the Bolschoi Theatre (each one at 7 PM) from 14 to 17 February.

On the occasion of this premiere, the musicologists and music journalists Andrei Ustinov, Alexander Laskowski and Ekaterina Klyutchnikova have announced an International Weinberg Conference to be held from 16 to 19 February 2017 in the rooms of the Bolshoi Theatre and the Russian State Art Historical Institute. The organisers of the conference, sponsored by the Russian Ministry of Culture, are the Bolshoi Theatre, the Yekaterinenburg Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Russian State Art Historical Institute, the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw and the Russian music journal ‘Musykalnoye obosreniye’. To begin with, participants will attend a performance of the opera ‘The Idiot’ on the first day of the conference; two days later, they will also have the opportunity to see the second great Weinberg opera ‘The Passenger’, a production of the Yekaterinenburg Opera and Ballet Theatre which will present a guest performance on 18 and 19 February at the Bolshoi Theatre. The conference directors are now calling for international Weinberg researchers and specialists to take part at the conference by delivering lectures. The texts will subsequently be printed in a symposium volume. It is hoped that these activities will result in further enrichment of scholarly literature on Weinberg in the Russian language and of Weinberg research as a whole.
